Sustainable tourism in local communities: economic and cultural benefits

Abstract

The study focused on analyzing how sustainable practices in tourism can enhance the economic and cultural growth of local communities. To meet this objective, a case study methodology was adopted, analyzing in depth several communities that have implemented such practices, taking advantage of relevant documents, records and audiovisual materials to provide a holistic picture. The results showed that a significant 65% of these communities experienced an increase in their income after implementing sustainable tourism. In addition, 75% highlighted a strengthening in the preservation and promotion of their cultural heritage, and 80% observed a reduction in the emigration of young people thanks to the job opportunities generated. A relevant fact was that 70% of these communities reinvested in infrastructure and local education with funds from sustainable tourism activities. The study concludes that sustainable tourism, beyond its economic benefits, enriches and protects the cultural heritage, strengthening the identity and cohesion of the communities
